The Memphis Grizzles announced Monday evening that Ja Morant will miss the rest of the season to undergo right shoulder surgery.
Morant experienced a subluxation in his right shoulder during a Saturday training session, leading to his absence in Sunday’s victory against the Phoenix Suns on the road. An MRI disclosed an underlying labral tear, necessitating surgery for repair, as confirmed by the team.
Ja should be ready for the start of the 2024-25 season.
Following Steven Adams, Morant is the second Memphis starter set for season-ending surgery. Adams had already undergone surgery in the preseason to address a PCL injury in his right knee, sidelining him since January of the previous year.
With Morant on the court, the Grizzlies have a 6-3 record, equivalent to their win total during the 25-game suspension he underwent at the start of the season. Morant faced the suspension due to conduct detrimental to the league.
This involved brandishing a firearm in an Instagram Live video. This incident led to an eight-game suspension last season as well.
A two-time All-Star in the first season of a five-year, $197 million maximum contract extension, Ja has averaged 25.1 points and 8.1 assists in his nine games this season.
The Grizzlies currently have a 13-23 record and are in 13th place in a Western Conference.
