Kansas City, Mo— Antonio Pierce and the Raiders dropped a lovely gift on fans with a 20-14 win over division rival KC Chiefs.
Capitalizing on two defensive touchdowns for the second consecutive week and adopting an assertive approach that effectively subdued Patrick Mahomes, the Raiders took home a 20-14 victory on Monday. This not only prevented their longstanding AFC West rival from clinching another division crown but also preserved the Raiders’ postseason hopes.
“That was one of our mantras,” Raiders interim coach Antonio Pierce said afterward, “by any means necessary.”
This involved the defensive tackle Bilal Nichols scoring a touchdown by returning a fumble for 8 yards, and Jack Jones swiftly adding another score with a 33-yard interception just 7 seconds later. Aidan O’Connell managed to avoid completing a pass after the first quarter, showcasing a performance without the same mistakes Mahomes made for Kansas City on a wet Christmas Day.
Obviously this was a huge game. It’s a rivalry game,” O’Connell said. “We play them twice a year, every year, so to come into Arrowhead Stadium and win a game like this, it’s pretty awesome. It’s pretty special for our guys.”
The Raiders (7-8) achieved a rare feat by becoming the first NFL team since 2000 to secure a victory without completing a pass after the first quarter. Additionally, they joined an exclusive group as the fifth team to beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium without scoring an offensive touchdown.
The Raiders won, despite the absence of injured running back Josh Jacobs. In a challenging day for their offense, White managed to rush for 145 yards, with a significant amount of yards gained in the final possession. O’Connell’s performance was limited, completing only 9 of 21 passes for 62 yards. The team struggled in key areas, going 0 for 3 in the red zone and 3 for 12 on third down, while also recording seven fewer first downs than Kansas City.
End of the day, none of it matters. Why? Because the Raiders won and kept their playoff hopes alive!
