Elmont, NY—On Tuesday night, the New York Islanders secured a 3-1 victory against the Edmonton Oilers with power-play goals from Anders Lee and Bo Horvat.
Ilya Sorokin had 30 saves on the evening, and Simon Holstrom scored his league leading fifth short-handed goal.
“It took a little bit of everything from all facets of the game,” Lee said. “All guys in their respective areas stepped up and really did a great job.”
In a third straight loss, the Edmonton Oilers took an early lead, scoring 1:23 into the first period as Draisaitl caught Sorokin off guard it marked his 13th goal of the season. Stuart Skinner made 17 saves for the Oilers.
In the second period, the Isles scored all three of their goals to take a commanding lead.
At 2:39, Lee equalized, by capitalizing on Kyle Palmieri’s shot slipping through Skinner’s pads, burying the loose puck for his eighth goal. Later, with 8 1/2 minutes remaining, Brock Nelson assisted Horvat in the slot, extending the Islanders’ lead to 2-1. This marked Horvat’s 13th goal and extended his career-high point streak to 11 games.
“Special teams was such a big part of the game,” Horvat said. “It was a really good pass (from Nelson). I honestly didn’t think he saw me over there and could get it to me but he fed it through three sticks. Special play by him.”
Holmstrom capitalized on a pinpoint one-time pass from Jean-Gabriel Pageau with 5:50 remaining, taking advantage of an errant pass by Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the offensive zone. The result was an odd-man rush. Despite Edmonton having a 58-second two-man advantage shortly afterward, they failed to score, managing only one shot attempt on goal following Holmstrom’s score.
Isles held the Oilers to 0-4 on the Power-Play for the evening.. it was a solid defensive effort.
