Las Vegas—Four days after being shutout 3-0 by the Vikings, the Las Vegas Raiders posted a 63-21 W on Thursday night, setting a franchise scoring record and preventing the Los Angeles Chargers from crossing midfield until the third quarter. This surpassed the Chargers’ previous highest points allowed, which was 57 against the St. Louis Rams on Oct. 1, 2000.
At halftime, the Raiders held a commanding 42-0 lead, coming within three points of the NFL record set in 2009 by New England with a 45-0 lead over Tennessee. This 42-point margin was previously set by Green Bay against Chicago in 2014 and the Packers against Tampa Bay in 1983. Las Vegas also matched their franchise record for points in a half, originally set in 1969 against Buffalo. The halftime deficit marked the largest in Chargers history.
The Raiders (6-8) had remarkable reversal, after last weeks debacle and being shutout by the Vikings. This week they came out and put 9 TD’s on the board. Scoring on both offense and defense. With a total of 8 different players scoring touchdowns, two being on defense. John Jenkins had a fumble recovery for the defense, and Jack Jenkins had a pick six.
Aidan O’Connell threw all four of his touchdown passes in the opening half, for a total of 248 passing yards. Davante Adams had eight receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown, marking his first 100-yard game since Week 3 against Pittsburgh.
Las Vegas’ defense setouchdowns in the second half through a fumble recovery and interception, marking the first instance of the Raiders scoring two defensive touchdowns since 2006 against the Steelers.
In his debut start for the injured Justin Herbert, Los Angeles quarterback Easton Stick completed 23 of 32 passes for 257 yards, for 3 touchdowns and one interception. With the Chargers losing five of their last six games, the pressure on coach Brandon Staley is likely to intensify, especially after a blowout loss to a team on a three-game losing streak. The Chargers’ struggles were evident in the first half, committing three turnovers, each resulting in a Raiders touchdown.
“Just wasn’t good enough,” Staley said in a televised halftime interview. “That wasn’t us out there.”
After the game Staley said “Games like this happen to every coach in the league. It’s part of sports.”
By the second quarter, Las Vegas confidence was flying. Enough so to execute three consecutive gadget plays. Jakobi Meyers threw a pass to Davante Adams, Tre Tucker ran the ball, and Brandon Bolden scored a 26-yard touchdown from the wildcat formation – his first since late in the 2021 season.
In the second half, Meyers connected with Adams once more, this time for a 3-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead to 49-0. Los Angeles managed to break through on their subsequent possession as Stick connected with Joshua Palmer for a 79-yard touchdown, marking the first time the Chargers crossed the 50-yard line.
Does Staley still have a job in the morning?
