Long Island, NY—The 2nd place Islanders(14-7-7) entered tonight’s home game at UBS Arena red hot, coming off a 4-game win streak at home. They faced off against conference rival the Boston Bruins(18-5-4). Unfortunately, the Bruins defeated the Islanders 5-4 in the shootout on Friday night.

In the third round of the shootout David Pastrnak scored to give the Boston Bruins a 5-4 win over the New York Islanders.

Pastrnak, Morgan Geekie, James van Reimsdyk, and Mason Lohrei all managed to found the back of the net in regulation, with Lohrei leveling the score at 3:09 left in the game through a bank shot from behind the goal line. Linus Ullmark’s 34 saves contributed to Boston’s 19-5-4 record, leading the Eastern Conference.

Brock Nelson, Bo Horvat, Alexander Romanov, and Simon Holmstrom netted goals for New York, with Ilya Sorokin making 29 saves. New York won their last four matches.

In an intense overtime, Charlie Coyle and Pastrnak scored for Boston in the shootout, while Holmstrom scored for the Islanders.

At 5:06 of the third period, Horvat secured a 3-2 lead for the Islanders with a power play goal, further extending his points streak to nine games.

Brad Marchand seemed to have equalized with 10:21 left, but a video review revealed that the Boston captain had punched the puck past Sorokin while lying on the ice. The goal was disallowed. Moments later Marchand drew a tripping penalty on New York captain Anders Lee, leading to van Riemsdyk’s power-play goal, tying the game with 9:12 remaining.

Later, Nelson elevated a pass from Horvat over Ullmark on a power play, giving New York a 4-3 lead with 7:59 to go.

Next Up: The Isles travel to Montreal tomorrow Saturday 12/15 to play the Canadiens.
