Elmont NY— On Wednesday night, Simon Holmstrom secured a short-handed goal with 1:33 left, leading the New York Islanders’ to a 4-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at UBS Arena. Holmstrom roofed the shot over the right shoulder of John Gibson.

Semyon Varlamov locked up the win by making two crucial saves in the final moments of the Ducks’ power play.

He gloved a shot from Ryan Strome with 5.7 seconds remaining and followed it with another glove stop on Frank Vatrano just two seconds later, following Anaheim’s face-off victory. Varlamov had 20 saves on the evening.

Mathew Barzal, Kyle Palmieri, and Casey Cizikas each found the back of the net, while Noah Dobson contributed with two assists for the Islanders (14-7-7). The team won their fourth consecutive game and extended their point streak to seven games (6-0-1).

The Ducks (10-18-0) saw goals from Sam Carrick, Adam Henrique, and Troy Terry. Despite their efforts, they have lost four consecutive matches and 12 of their last 13. Gibson made 30 saves on the evening.

Palmieri secured a 1-0 advantage for the Islanders just 40 seconds into the second period. He scored by executing a one-timer from the right circle, capitalizing on a pass from Brock Nelson behind the net, beating Gibson on the short side.

At 6:32 into the second period Cizikas extended the lead to 2-0, scoring on a cross-ice pass from Cal Clutterbuck during a 3-on-2 rush.

Henrique evened the score at 2-2, capitalizing on a rebound off Jean-Gabriel Pageau’s skate, after Urho Vaakanainen’s one-timer.

Later, Carrick gave the Ducks a 3-2 lead when he scored in the third period. The shot deflected off Samuel Bolduc’s stick and got past Varlamov’s blocker.

Matt Barzal, tied the game 3-3 with a well-executed power-play goal – a one-timer from the edge of the left circle, finding the high blocker side at 7:46 in the final period.
