The New York Yankees pulled off a major trade today, acquiring star outfielder Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres in a significant move during an otherwise quiet MLB offseason for them. The deal aims to enhance the Yankees lineup beyond the 2022 American League MVP Aaron Judge.
Notable names going to the Padres include starting pitcher Michael King, accompanied by pitching prospects Drew Thorpe, Randy Vasquez, Jhony Brito, and catcher Kyle Higashhioka. 2x Gold Glove winning Outfielder Trent Grisham is set to join Soto in New York as well.
Soto, a 25-year-old perennial All-Star and MVP candidate, boasts an impressive career OPS+ of 157, ranking third among active players with a minimum of 3,000 plate appearances, behind Judge and Mike Trout.
The acquisition of Soto, who gained fame with the Washington Nationals and contributed to their 2019 World Series victory, strengthens the Yankees’ lineup. Soto, made available due to the Padres’ financial considerations after owner Peter Siedler’s passing, is expected to enter free agency next winter with high contract expectations.
While Soto’s initial stint in San Diego saw a dip in numbers, he played a crucial role in the Padres’ NLDS upset over the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the latest season, Soto stood out with a .275/.410/.519 slash line, 35 home runs, and 109 RBIs, despite the team’s disappointing overall results.
Soto is anticipated to play left field for the Yankees, contributing to a lineup that now includes Alex Verdugo, acquired from the Red Sox. Both left-handed hitters, Soto and Verdugo, are likely to benefit from playing home games at Yankee Stadium, particularly with its renowned short porch in right field.
This trade further bolsters the Yankees’ outfield and adds depth to their potent lineup alongside Judge, Anthony Rizzo, DJ LeMahieu, and Giancarlo Stanton.
