Admittedly, I am a casual NCAA football fan. Although the detractors will say this makes me unqualified to weigh in on this year’s selection process, I believe someone like me is exactly the right type of person to analyze the outcome.
I do not have a horse in the race and can assess the decision with zero emotion or allegiance. So here goes….
First let’s take a look at the selection committee’s criteria for selection. They are as follows:
- Conference championships won.
- Strength of schedule & head – to – head competition.
- Comparative outcomes of common opponents.
- Other relative factors such as unavailability of key players or coaches that may have affected a team’s performance during the season or likely will affect its postseason performance.
It’s the fourth criteria that I have an issue with and the one the selection committee used to deny Florida State their rightful place in the CFB playoffs. Let’s examine this fourth criteria more closely.
The first part – namely – ” unavailability of key players or coaches that may have affected a team’s performance during the season ” was not the reason for the snub as the Seminoles won their last 2 games to finish with an undefeated 13-0 season and the ACC Championship.
Winning two games, with the last – ” A Championship” without your star Quarterback (the most important position on the team) actually shows how great a team they are. However, winning without a star quarterback is not exciting.
It doesn’t matter how they won, as they won. That is how sport is measured – wins and losses, not how good you look winning.
So, it has to be the second part of criteria #4 that the selection committee used despite comments from Boo Corrigan the CFB selection committee chair.
I quote ” Florida State was a different team than they were in the first 11 weeks. “
He and his cohorts were worried about the competitiveness of Florida State against the Wolverines, not the fact that they were a different team. An uncompetitive, non -compelling game would attract less viewers. Lower ratings will result in less advertising revenue at some point.
Let’s face it , the Alabama – Michigan matchup is a sexier and more intriguing matchup than Michigan and Florida State. Sorry Seminoles fans!
The second part …. ” Or likely will affect its postseason performance.” should state “or if an injury to an important position will cause the possibility of a less intriguing game due to a potential blowout or less offence.
Florida State should be the 4th seed. The fact that they are not is truly pathetic and once again suggests that the NCAA is only interested in the almighty dollar generated on the backs of their student athletes.
