Federal Regulators officially approved the merger of the two spring football leagues.

The USFL which was founded in 1982, had its’ first initial season in 1983 and had its’ first final season in 1986. The league returned very briefly in 2022.

The XFL was first founded in 1999 by WWF/E owner (former owner now) Vince McMahon. It lasted only a single season. The league returned for a second time in 2020 but was cut short by “COVID-19”.

McMahon then sold the league to Redbird Capital, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his ex-wife Dany Garcia.

Both leagues lost money last season, and the hope is that by combining together, they can continue to give players that are on the fringes of making the NFL, an opportunity to showcase their skills.

The newly combined spring league put out a statement.

“We are pleased to have completed the antitrust review process in connection with the proposed merger of the XFL and the USFL and intend to play a combined season this spring, kicking off on Saturday, March 30. We are now finalizing terms of the definitive agreement and will share more about the new league in the coming weeks.”

Each league had 8 teams playing for them. They decided NOT to expand to 16 teams, and instead, each league will keep 4 teams. That means 8 teams will play in this upcoming season. Speculation below regarding the teams that will be in the new combined league.

The 4 teams that the XFL will keep are the,

• Arlington Renegades
• DC Defenders
• San Antonion Brahmas
• St. Louis Battlehawks

The 4 teams that the USFL will keep are the,

• Birmingham Stallions
• Houston Gamblers
• Memphis Showboats
• Michigan Panthers

Details like the new league name, player employment terms and conditions, and broadcasting rights, have yet to be agreed on, by the parties involved.

Fans are anxious to hear what those end up being.
