With several contracts ending after the 2023 season. The Chiefs has entered extension discussions with versatile corner L’Jarius Sneed. During Reid’s time coaching for Kansas City they have not been known for keeping corners. Choosing to draft them (Peters, Sneed, McDuffie, Watson, Williams) or acquire good value through trades (Ward).

However, with extension talks with Chris Jones failing. They might be thinking it would be better to let him go to retain more pieces. Successful talks with Sneed might open the door to retaining more talent.

Among Notable names they might like to retain are linebacker Willie Gay Jr., Guard Nick Allegretti, and Defensive End Mike Danna. Sneed’s prospective extension would likely leave more room to retain these or other desirable players than Jones’ would.

History seems to point to this being Sneed’s final year as a Chief. However, Sneed has been a key piece in the improvements on the Chiefs defense. While Sneed’s play isn’t as flashy as it was in 2022, he’s still among the top 15 at preventing separation among corners this year.

He’s also allowed no touchdowns so far this season, and has the ability to play in the slot or outside of it.

It’s hard to see them finding a way to retain both Sneed and Jones. The Chiefs tend to keep things under wraps well so there may be little more news on either until things are final.

For myself, Sneed is one of my favorite players, and personally I’d really like for him to stay in the red and gold. I will be watching for any developments here.
