Now that the NFL Trade Deadline has come and gone, it’s time to look at the trades, and I’ll give you the REAL grades on some of these moves.
It turned out to be a busy day for trades. A lot of the players are on the final years of their contracts, so some are considered “rental pieces” for now. Some are looking to either get another contract with the team they were traded to, or boost their stats to sign elsewhere in the upcoming offseason.
Washington Commanders trade DE Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers.
The rich keep getting richer. That is certainly the case with the 49ers. The addition of the former NFL DROTY, adds to a defensive line, a line that is already one of the best in the league. They got him for ONLY a 2024 third round pick!!! That is felony theft. Chase Young now reunites with college teammate DE Nick Bosa, which gives them, possibly, the best “bookends” in the NFL.
The Commanders are obviously now punting on the season. Young was easily one of the most highly sought after prizes at the deadline. Getting only a third round pick is offensive to the team and to the fans. Therefore, I think they panicked. Moving on from him is OK, but they let themselves get fleeced.

Washington Commanders trade DE Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears.
The Chicago Bears made a big splash, by trading for DE Montez Sweat. The move definitely makes them better along the defensive line and front seven. Sweat gives them a real bonafied pass rusher. However, what makes this move odd is that not only is Montez Sweat on the final year of his deal, the Bears gave up a second round draft pick for him. On a team that lacks starting talent, a second rounder, is probably going to be a starter, and cheaper.
As stated above, the Commanders are in full sale mode. Getting a second round pick is probably going to net them a rookie starter on a rookie contract. Washington now has 5 picks in the first three rounds of next year’s NFL Draft.

Minnesota Vikings trade OG Ezra Cleveland to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Jaguars go out and get an immediate plug-in-play offensive lineman for only a sixth round draft pick. Don’t get me wrong, he isn’t a Pro Bowl caliber player, but he’ll come to hold his own on a team that is destined to make the playoffs.
The Vikings apparently like backup OG Blake Brandel a lot. Giving up a player that can step in and immediately play says a lot. I think it was a horrible move to only trade him for a sixth. With the dearth of quality lineman plaguing the league, it was just plain bad.

Arizona Cardinals trade QB Josh Dobbs to the Minnesota Vikings.
With Vikings starting QB Kirk Cousins tearing his Achilles tendon and being done for the season, they needed to make some kind of move. Trading for QB Josh Dobbs is a good move. He’s played well while being pushed into the starting role with only one week’s notice before the season started.
With QB Kyler Murray coming back, Arizona felt like they didn’t need to have Dobbs on the roster anymore. Clayton Tune will be starting now until Murray is fully ready. Bad move by Arizona.
