Seahawks pay $647,222
Here’s a move that Benefits both the Giants and the Seahawks. The Giants are having a return to reality start to the 2023 season going 2-6 and hopes for playoffs are out of reach considering the current roster. Moving the 8 year veteran, Leonard Williams, in a contract year is a great move to help bolster draft capital for the next 2 drafts. Paying Daniel Jones 40 million a year comes with a few costs and this is the first of the fallout in 2023. Although getting a 2nd rounder in 2024 and a 5th in 2025 is very good return. The deal was sweetened by Seattle by giving a 2nd rather than a 3rd. Although in return the Giants had to pay almost all of Williams’ 2023 Salary, leaving Seattle to pay a minimum salary of $647,222 for the remainder of the season. The Giants have a solid Defensive line even with the departure of Williams as well as Daboll being a trenches kind of coach, I believe that the Giants made a very smart move.
The Seahawks have started the season at 5-2 and take the lead of the NFC West. They are in a position to win the division and want to make a run this year with the emergence of their defense. Coming into the season the Seahawks weakest position was the interior defensive line and it was no secret. In the off season, the Seahawks acquired Dre’mont Jones and Reunited with Jarran Reed. They have been a serviceable lineup. But to be able to beat out the heavy hitting 49ers for the division, adding Williams to the lineup will increase their odds of beating out the early season juggernaut. Seattle has struggled drafting the interior position and have met that with going and getting a guy who has been able to get it done. Williams being a top 10 IDL player over the last three seasons makes that rising Seattle defense that much better. The price Seattle paid was fairly steep, so I’m thinking they are hoping to extend or resign Williams.
A fun side note, both Jamal Adams and Jordan love played with Williams in the past. I can’t imagine either of those guys not mentioning his game changing ability on and off the field.
Overall I give the Giants a big A+ for this deal and the Seahawks a B. If Seattle can get a deal done with Williams I’d reconsider a higher trade grade. Only time will tell if this move is worth it for both parties.
