The Columbus Blue Jackets made an interesting move Friday.

They have claimed G Spencer Martin off waivers from the Vancouver Canucks.

He was a third-round selection by the Colorado Avalanche in 2013.

The tall 6 foot 3, 191-pound goalie is from Oakville, Ontario, Canada. He played four seasons in Major Junior Hockey, with the Mississauga Steelheads of the OHL (Ontario Hockey League).

He’s has played 38 games in the NHL with a 14-17-5, a 3.63 GAA, and a .885 save percentage. Those starts were with Colorado and Vancouver.

Martin has spent most of his professional career in the AHL (American Hockey League). He has a record of 94-85-22 with a 2.88 GAA, .905 save percentage, and 13 shutouts in 214 games in the AHL. He’s played with Abbotsford, Colorado, San Antonio and Syracuse.

Its’ been widely speculated that the Blue Jackets would have Elvis Merzlikins and Daniil Tarasov starting between the pipes in Columbus and have Jet Greaves starting for their AHL affiliate Cleveland Monsters.

The addition of Martin now has people wondering if that is still the case or are they using him as possible trade bait for later in the season.

I find the move interesting. I would have Martin start the season, while working Greaves into a larger role as the season progresses.
