It was announced early on Wednesday that the Chicago Cubs were promoting their 2020 4th round pick Luke Little to the big league roster.
It should come as no surprise to those who have been keeping an eye on what Little has been doing in AAA Iowa. He was even included as one of my Five Potential September Call Ups. Little started this season as a starter in High-A, but was converted to a reliever and has quickly risen the ranks, posting a 1.54 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP across 11.2 innings of work in Iowa, while striking out 41.2% of batters faced.
The southpaw stands at a towering 6’8″ and his delivery is extra hard for lefties to track. The Cubs haven’t gotten much productions from lefties in the bullpen, Brandon Hughes has been injured and Anthony Kay was ineffective in his time with the big league club. Little joins Drew Smyly as the pair of lefties in the bullpen.
Little won’t start out in the high leverage situations, but there will be opportunities for him to prove that he is capable of handling them, and he has tremendous upside for the future. The Cubs announced they have DFA’d Shane Greene as the corresponding move.
