WWE August 18th, 2023 (Toronto- Ontario/ Canada)
About 14,500 Fans filled Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada, to capacity for WWE SmackDown.
There was a good reason for this: 25 years of Edge in WWE were to be celebrated on this evening. The “Rated-R Superstar” had announced in advance that he might even compete in his last match ever for the promotion.
Over the broadcast, the quarter century of Edge was celebrated with one of the most popular wrestling superstars: Various colleagues – including John Cena and Kurt Angle – addressed personal words to Edge. And a detailed video looking back on his WWE career was also not to be missed.
The search is on for a Number One Contender to the U.S. Championship
-Grayson Waller welcomed new United States Champion Rey Mysterio. and fellow LWO member . Santos Escobar, as guests on his talk show, the “Grayson Waller Effect,” to kick off WWE SmackDown.
Waller wants to sow discord between Rey and Santos. He said Mysterio took away Escobar’s chance at the title the previous week.
But Rey stated, “The main thing is that the title is with the LWO!” And Santos also got behind his mentor and thought he saw through Waller’s game.
The dethroned Austin Theory interjected. He continued to believe he had been cheated seven days ago. Theory therefore demanded a rematch.
But LA Knight also showed interest: “Congratulations, Rey Mysterio! But everyone knows that sooner or later the title will end up with me!”
WWE official Adam Pearce floated the idea of a #1 contender match between LA Knight and Austin Theory. In fact, it happened to go on right on…
The Miz makes sure that LA Knight is not in the Spotlight
•#1 Contenders Match (WWE United States Championship): Austin Theory def. LA Knight via Pinfall with an Roll Up•
Before the first match of the night started on WWE SmackDown, The Miz made his way to the ring.
And of course, Miz (after facing him recently on Raw) was supposed to have an impact on LA Knight’s match. Knight managed to keep his cool for a long time, and was able to fend off Austin Theory’s attempt at the A-Town Down, amongst other things.
When it was time for the Yeah-Elbow, The Miz climbed to the edge of the ring. Chaos erupted, and Miz soon found himself in the ring. Knight sent him over the ropes with a Clothesline.
At this point Theory was on the spot, and took Knight by surprise, and pinned him with a single roll. Knight was quickly back on his feet, but of course he knew that he had just been caught off guard.
Austin Theory thus secured an early rematch against US Champion Rey Mysterio. And the fans of LA Knight still have to wait until he wins his first title in WWE.
Harmony between Flair and Belair?
On the previous edition of WWE SmackDown, a match between Charlotte Flair and Asuka had ended in a no contest, after interference from WWE Women’s Champion Iyo Sky.
Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair already had to tag as a team before SummerSlam. Flair’s big ego managed to get in the way of Bianca the previous time. This time the team should work.
This time, it was Flair falling behind due to the machinations of Damage CTRL. Charlotte then managed to switch things up, though, when Iyo missed with a Shoulerblock into the ring corner.
Bayley now went for a Figure 4 Leglock on Charlotte, but Flair fended off the attack with a punch. Followed by an exchange with Bianca succeeded. Charlotte was able to deliver another kick to Bayley, and Belair followed with the KOD for the win.
Little Revenge against Bianca
-But for the pinfall against Bayley, Damage CTRL took revenge a little later in the evening!
When Bianca Belair was interviewed backstage, the trio was suddenly there. Damage CTRL brutally went after Bianca.
Iyo worked Bianca over with a chair. Bianca’s leg was clamped between the back of a chair and was particularly affected.
-Another tribute video follows, in which more wrestlers talk about Edge’s career.
Bobby Lashley is Proud of the Street Profits
•The Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins) def. The O.C. (Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows); Ford pinned Anderson after a Spinebuster/Neckbreaker-Combination•
The Street Profits presented themselves in fresh outfits and also presented a new finisher.
In the match, the Profits were able to fend off the Magic Killer attempt. Montez Ford followed shortly after with his massive dive over the ropes on Luke Gallows.
In the ring, Angelo Dawkins delivered the Sky High approach shortly after. The already substituted Montez Ford combined the action with a neckbreaker and then got the pin against Karl Anderson.
Bobby Lashley then took the stage and celebrated the success together with the Street Profits. This new alliance seems to continue to thrive.
Paul Heyman announces Jimmy Uso will be on WWE SmackDown next week
-A big interview with Paul Heyman on the possible end of Bloodline was announced for this edition of WWE SmackDown.
But then, talking to Kayla Braxton, Heyman wouldn’t say anything about the speculation. “Should we talk about the rumors I’ve heard about you?”, Paul countered the reporter’s questions.
Heyman continued to dodge until he received a phone call during the interview. After that, he assured Jimmy Uso would be appearing on WWE SmackDown next week. However, Paul would not reveal his source for this information.
Edge Wins his possibly last WWE Match
•Edge def. Sheamus- via Pinfall with the Spear•
For the last match within his current WWE contract, Edge came to the ring in the colors of the Toronto Maple Leafs. As a local hero, he received a particularly emotional reception. Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix, the couple’s children, and other family members and friends watched from the front row.
Edge had hinted in advance that this could be his last WWE match ever.
Against his friend Sheamus, the soon-to-be 50-year-old, once again delivered a spirited performance.
Edge unpacked his most famous moves from 25 years in this match for perhaps the last time: After a superplex from the top rope, Edge hit the Edgecution for a near-fall.
“You’ve still got it!” the Canadian spectators attested to him.
Sheamus came back off the ropes with White Noise. After that, a Celtic Cross connected for a near fall. Edge didn’t let a long series of Beats of the Bodhran on the ring ropes take away his will to fight. He got into position for the Spear, but Sheamus caught him off guard with the Brogue Kick beforehand. Again only to a 2-count.
Sheamus looked to follow up with another Brogue Kick, but Edge dodged it and delivered a roll-in. Sheamus stayed in the race and then managed to Kick-Out after a Spear!
The 11-time World Champion had slight doubts whether he could even defeat Sheamus.
Both opponents now took a run-up from different corners of the ring: Edge delivered his Spear a second time before Sheamus could deliver the Brogue Kick.
1…2…3 – Edge got the victory. Toronto rejoiced. By the end of the broadcast, Sheamus and the WWE Hall of Famer were in each other’s arms.
