The College Football League of America

The recent wave of college football realignment is just a continuation of what began on June 29th 2003 when Miami of Florida and Virginia Tech left the Big East Conference for the Atlantic Coast Conference. The reason that those two schools made the move in 2003 is the same reason that the realignment is happening in 2023…. MONEY, in particular the revenue that can be generated from payments from TV and cable networks, this is all about the eyeballs that watch big time college football.

Two years ago, Texas and Oklahoma announced that they would be leaving the Big 12 and joining the SEC Conference, this left the Big 12 scrambling. Former commissioner of the Big 12, Bob Bowlsby, acted quickly and raided the AAC and added three teams from that conference, UCF, Cincinnati, and Houston. The Big 12 then added BYU as well.

In 2022 the BIG 10 acted by adding USC and UCLA, this move left the Pac 12 reeling as USC was the one team the Pac 12 could not afford to lose as it left them without their top revenue generating school. Now in 2023 the Big 12 has raided the PAC 12 by adding the 4 corner schools, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah. The BIG 10 acted again and added Oregon and Washington. These moves have left the PAC 12 down to 4 schools Washington State, Oregon State, Stanford and California.

The future of those four teams is in doubt as all four are exploring options. This will likely not end until we have One Super Conference in College Football. This is what that could look like. A 48 team Super Conference. some of the Blue Bloods of football Alabama, LSU, Florida, Auburn, Georgia, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Texas, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin, USC, UCLA, Washington, Oregon, Miami of Florida, Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Stanford, Arizona, Arizona State, Texas Tech, TCU, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Houston, UCF, BYU, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame some schools in existing power 5 conferences did not make this iteration of a super conference some on this list are not Blue Bloods of the sport.

However, it is a good starting point of discussion of what a future Super Conference could look like. The College Football League of America. THE CFLA it has a nice ring to it!!!

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
