The National Football League announced some major items Monday afternoon during the first day of their spring meetings. The first item is the league is now allowed to flex Thursday Night Football games and the second item was the location of the 2025 NFL Draft. Also teams can now carry 3 quarterbacks on game day.
The NFL owners voted 24-8 to allow the NFL to have the abiltiy to flex some games late in the season that would be on Amazon Prime streaming on Thursday nights. This resolution is on a trial basis for the upcoming year with the resolution carrying over into 2024 if no games get flexed.
The NFL will be able to switch a Sunday afternoon game to Thursday night and move the original scheduled Thursday night game to Sunday afternoon in weeks 13-17. The newly adopted resolution now gives the NFL flex options on all of its prime-time games.
The games that could be rescheduled from Thurdsay night to Sunday afternoon are:
Week 13: Seahawks at Cowboys
Week 14: Patriots at Steelers
Week 15: Chargers at Raiders
Week 16: Saints at Rams
Week 17: Jets at Browns
Another item was Green Bay being awarded the 2025 NFL Draft. The NFL’s smallest city with a population of just over 107,000 will host the event in and around Lambeau Field. Detroit will host the 2024 NFL Draft.
Also the NFL owners approved a new rule that will allow teams on game day to designate an emergency quarterback. The NFL has limited this to quarterbacks who are on the team’s 53-man roster and the rule was put into place to avoid what happened in the NFC Championship game when the 49ers ran out of quarterbacks.
