The San Antonio Spurs were the lucky ones Tuesday night in Chicago at the NBA’s Draft Lottery. The Spurs who had a 14% chance, the highest percentage along with the Pistons and Rockets, won the first overall pick in next months NBA Draft and will take the 7’ 4” Victor Wembanyama from France.
Winning the lottery for the third time in franchise history the Spurs will take the generational giant in Wembanyama. The other two times the Spurs received the first overall selections was in 1987 and 1997 in which they selected David Robinson and Tim Duncan “the Twin Towers” respectfully.
The Spurs could not contain their excitement once it was revealed that Charlotte would pick second. Peter John Holt (Chairman of Spurs Sports and Entertainment) shouted out, “Let’s go” on stage and joyfully headed to the podium to receive the Spurs logo draft card from NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum.
The biggest loser of the night was the Detroit Pistons who had the highest odds along with the Spurs and Rockets but fell to the number 5 spot. Ben Wallace who represented the franchise on stage was not thrilled and his look emulated those feelings.
So once again the Spurs will draft another “Tower” like they did with Robinson and Duncan. Head coach Gregg Popovich has to be thrilled along with all Spurs fans. No pressure but Duncan did win 5 rings, the Frenchman you got next.
