The Carolina Hurricanes knocked out the New Jersey Devils in game 5 last night, a thrilling OT win, 3-2. The Canes and Devils were the top 2 teams coming out of the Metro division, the Canes finished the season 52-21-9 (113 points) and the Devils finished 52-22-8 (112 points).
Going into game 5, the Hurricanes led the series 3-1, game 5 was very back and forth, the Devils took a 1-0 lead in the first period. Ten seconds into the second period, the Canes tied the game with a goal scored by Jacob Slavin.
Then about half way through the second period, the Devils took the lead back, goal scored by Timo Meier. With 40 seconds left in the second period, the Canes defenseman, Brent Burns, tied the game at 2.
The third period went scoreless, and we were headed to overtime. The OT period was a hard fought period, with the Devils season on the line, and the Canes trying to move on to the Eastern Conference Finals. With 13 minutes left in OT, Jesper Fast deflected a shot from Jesperi Kotkaniemi, to send the Devils home.
The Hurricanes will not wait for the winner of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers series. Game 5 in that series is tonight May 12th, in Toronto. The Panthers lead the series 3-1.
