I’m going to be honest, I’m not sure what the team chefs are cooking up for the players or what the coaching staff is teaching. . . But the 2023 Tampa Bay Rays are 13-0. That’s not a typo. With truly a perfect start to this season’s campaign, this year’s Rays are getting ever so close to breaking all-time records.
As of writing this article, Tampa, miraculously, is still undefeated and is making history by the day. With this jumpstart success, the Rays have the largest season-opening win streak in the wild card era (1995-present). Breezing past the 2003 Royals, who had a 9-0 start, this year’s Rays continue to attempt to solidify their unbreakable record.
However, this supernatural team still has records looming over their heads. With their 9-3 win over the Red Sox on Thursday the Rays tie the longest season-opening win streak, in the modern era (1900-present). With this victory over a division rival, the Rays join the likes of the 1987 Brewers and the 1982 Braves, at the top of the season-opener win streak totem poll, with 13 wins.
Now what’s next for the Rays? Tampa crosses the boarder to play another division rival, the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto is expected to play competitive in this series and has a real chance to snap Tampa’s streak.
However, with the record on the line, all eyes turn to this series, and once again it’s looking favorable for the Rays. The Rays get the pleasure of facing off against the struggling José Berrios, who in two starts has only managed to make it 9.2 innings, surrendering 12 runs in the process, placing him at a, 11.17 ERA. A struggling pitcher combined with a lineup that has been averaging 7.77 runs a game, places Tampa in a pretty positive situation.
Not only that but the Rays also starting Drew Rasmussen on the bump. To start the season he has been nearly flawless in his first two showings. Tying up 15 hitters in 13 innings and achieving a 0.23 WHIP and goose egg at his ERA, Drew has had nearly the perfect start to his year heading into Friday evenings game.
So with the chance to shatter a record on Friday night, do the Rays have what it takes?
