On Monday, the Saints signed former Raiders QB, Derek Carr, to a 4-year, $150 million-dollar deal. Averaging $37.5 million a year, Carr becomes the 9th highest-paid QB in the league, sitting behind Dak Prescott and Matthew Stafford.
I’m going, to be honest… I’m getting Deja-vu with this signing. To me, this feels like a page out of the Indianapolis Colts book. We have seen this story before. A team that has a supporting cast, that’s ready to win, but not having an athlete under center, that can put you over the top.
With the Colts, they lost their franchise QB, Andrew Luck, to an unexpected retirement and they tried to supplement him with average quarterback talent. They did this because the rest of their roster was complete and they were in win-now mode, all they were missing was a superstar QB.
Filling in with guys like Phillip Rivers, and Carson Wentz, always made the Colts good enough to get a later draft pick, to keep them from drafting a young, franchise-altering, quarterback talent, but the Colts were also bad enough where they always fell short of preseason expectations.
This is what I believe the Saints are signing up for.
Don’t get me wrong, Derek Carr is not a terrible Quarterback, but, he’s also not the answer.
Last season, Carr was given a few of the best skill position players in the game, but still fell short, winning just six games.
*Note: not to say that the Raiders didn’t have a plethora of other issues but Carr’s performance didn’t help.
The reality is, the Saints have a team that’s ready to win.
Simply put, Derek is not a Super Bowl-caliber QB. They are walking down that same path the Colts found themselves on. Good enough to stay relevant, but never good enough to win it all.
In the years to come, for the foundation of the Saints, players’ contracts begin to expire and their talent starts to deplete, New Orleans could find itself in a dangerous cycle with minimal success in sight.
So, Saints fans, as hard as it is to say… welcome to four more years of mediocre and possibly many more.
