Quarterbacks now more than ever, are crucial to a team’s success. Coach’s and General Managers dream of the day they can get a superstar talent under center.
As many teams enter uncertainty at the QB position this offseason, the obvious choice would to be to target an established veteran, one season removed from back-to-back MVP’s, right?…Right?
Aaron Rodgers has many gifts, these gifts include; precision passing, reading defenses, and baiting offsides calls. However, one gift that is often missed, is his ability to stir up drama and make headlines all year round, which is no easy feat.
Whether he’s trapped in a dark box, or being immunized with pixie dust, Rodgers finds a way to be front and center in the media world.
However, his pursuit for popularity has its drawbacks. According to NFL Insider, Peter King, four quarterback needy teams are not interested in the Rodgers sweepstakes. These franchises include the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers, and surprisingly the Las Vegas Raiders. Now, could this be driven by the want to draft a young quarterback to develop as your own? Absolutely, but, passing up on a consistent, proven, and distinguished talent, such as Rodgers, shouldn’t be an easy decision to pass this early in the offseason.
The fact that four teams have already expressed minimal interest in the Packers current QB should pose concerns going forward for both Rodgers and Green Bay.
As the market shrinks for Rodgers, so does the Packers possible trade return. Not only that, but this also has implications for Rodgers. Due to polarizing behavior, on and off the field, his leverage to make his own decisions diminishes. He loses the luxury of picking where he wants to go and his “my way or the high way” mentality, which he seems to frequently stick too, might land him in a less than optimal situation.
So, where will Rodgers end up? Will he run out of options? Are teams willing to risk joining Rodgers in the dark? Time will tell.
