It is always sad for Super Bowl Sunday to hit, but that just means draft season is approaching. CJ Hawkins, co-host of the We Like Sportz Podcast, breaks down his version of the 2023 NFL Mock Draft.
Mock Drafts? Let’s ride!
Round 1
- Carolina Panthers – CJ Stroud QB (Ohio State)
I know it can for sure change, but out of all the teams that need to move up for a quarterback, it’s Carolina. With their pick, I think Carolina goes CJ Stroud out of Ohio State. Stroud checks off every box, size, arm, accuracy, and pocket presence. Stroud led the Bucks for two years and had two stellar seasons, in 2021, completing 72 percent of his passes for 4,435 yards, 44 touchdowns and six interceptions. Then in 2022, Stroud completed 66 percent of his passes for 3,688 yards, 41 touchdowns and six interceptions, after losing his top three targets. Stroud has the look of a can’t miss prospect.
2. Houston Texans – Bryce Young QB (Alabama)
Bryce Young, NFL arm, superb accuracy, fantastic in the pocket, Heisman trophy winner, and is a good athlete that is smart with his runs. However, Young lacks size (both height and weight) and has an injury history. Young dominated the SEC in 2021 by completing 67 percent of his passes for 4,872 yards, 47 touchdowns and seven picks. He did have a “down year” in 2022, Young completed 65 percent of his passes for 3,328 yards, 32 touchdowns and five interceptions. Young still is an elite level prospect and has been at every level, from high school to college and college to the NFL.
3. Arizona Cardinals – Will Anderson Edge (Alabama)
In the NFL you need to be able to pressure the quarterback and Will Anderson does just that. In three years at Alabama, he recorded 7.5, 17.5, and 10 sacks. Anderson is an elite level pass rusher and does an excellent job against the run as well. He doesn’t have that Myles Garrett like size, but if he brings college production to the NFL, he will have a very long and successful career.
4. Indianapolis Colts – Will Levis QB (Kentucky)
Levis has an NFL skill set, arm, mobility, height, weight. Levis was excellent in 2021, but the red flags really showed through in 2022. Levis simply does not take care of the football though. Colts (and others) will be enamored with the size and arm talent though. Levis has the potential to be a top pick in the draft, but this pick does come with risk.
5. Seattle Seahawks – Jalen Carter DT (Georgia)
Seattle gets arguably the best prospect to fall to them at #5. Jalen Carter was a projected first round pick last year but came back to lead Georgia to another national championship. Carter is a force in both the pass and run game. Explosive, a good athlete, makes big plays. The numbers won’t wow you, but just watch the tape and you’ll see Carter all over the screen. Carter is gifted, and very well rounded. The draft always has a guy get “red flags” about their personality around them, this year it seems to be Carter. Only time will tell if he can keep improving.
6. Detroit Lions – Bryan Bresee DL (Clemson)
The Lions defense needs to improve if they want to be able to make that playoff push next year. Bresee was the anchor of the Clemson defense last year, and Detroit will look to have that stabilize their line against the run and have his athleticism Bresee didn’t have elite pass rushing stats, but he had an 82.0 PFF pass-rushing grade last year.
7. Oakland Raiders – Paris Johnson Jr. OT (Ohio State)
I just don’t get think Oakland goes with a rookie quarterback, if they trade for a Rodgers, obviously this pick won’t be here. But let’s say they sign someone like a Jimmy G. Oakland needs to improve that o line and Paris Johnson can do just that. Played both guard and tackle very well at Ohio State. Johnson will help improve a Raider o line that needs help next season.
8. Atlanta Falcons – Myles Murphy EDGE (Clemson)
Atlanta was dead last in pressure for a second straight season. Insert Myles Murphy. Murphy has size, speed, length, and is fantastic against the run. Murphy still needs to improve but is very similar to last year’s number one overall pick Trayvon Walker. Murphy is raw though and will need to improve at the next level.
9. Chicago Bears – Jordan Addison WR (USC)
The Bears need a wide receiver to put it bluntly. Addison has been one of the best receivers in the country over the last two years. In 2021, he won the Biletnikoff Award at Pittsburgh after finishing with 1,593 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. While his production slightly dipped in 2022, he still went for 875 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Addison has been in the slot, out wide, and should be able to do whatever the Bears need him to do.
10. Philadelphia Eagles – Tyree Wilson Edge (Texas Tech)
The Eagle’s defense has been fantastic this season, but that line is not getting any younger. Graham is 34, Cox 32, Hargrave 30. Getting another young pass rusher to aid that stellar line would keep that elite pass rush going. Also, it allows Wilson to get time to develop and learn from incredible veterans.
11. Tennessee Titans – Peter Skoronski OT (Northwestern)
Tennessee will be moving on from Lewan this offseason and need a replacement. Skoronski was PFF’s highest graded pass blocker in the country last season. He has smaller arms, and that seems to be the only knock on him. Skoronski is a great athlete and should be protecting whoever the Titans have at QB for years to come.
12. Houston Texans – Quentin Johnston WR (TCU)
Houston got their QB and now it is time for them to get him his #1 wide receiver. Johnston has the elite size everyone looks for at 6’4 and the insane ability to make men miss. His 18 forced missed tackles this season ranked eighth among Power Five receivers. Throw in 4.4 speed and he had 97.1 receiving grade when targeted on post routes, he should be an instant deep threat in the NFL. He had a few small injuries, but him and Young could be a great connection.
13. New York Jets – Cam Smith CB (South Carolina)
The Jets defense was great last season, but they could use a man opposite of Sauce Gardner. Smith also feels like the best player on the board here. He has played outside and in the slot. Smith has good speed, and solid ball skills. Him and Sauce should be a solid duo for years to come.
14. New England Patriots – Jaxon Smith-Njigba WR (Ohio State)
Njiba felt like the #1 WR going into this season, call it an opt out or injury, whatever the case he was out virtually all season. He posted the one of the best seasons in Big 10 history in 2021, when in 13 games he had 1,606 yards, 9 TDs, and Stroud had a rating of 141.8 when targeting Njiba. The best example of his dominance came in the Rose Bowl, when he caught 15 passes for 347 yards. The Pats will hope to get this WR pick right.
15. Green Bay Packers – Michael Mayer TE (Notre Dame)
Mayer is the best tight end in this draft at 6’4 with great ball skills. Mayer has produced every year in college in the pass game, and on top of that is a very good blocker. Does it all but lacks top end speed of a Brock Bowers. Mayer has a super high floor, but is more of a Mark Andrews, than a Gronk or Kelce. Still a very solid prospect.
16. Washington Commanders – Anthony Richardson QB (Florida)
Commanders are searching for a QB, and Anthony Ricardson can be a franchise guy. Richardson is a freak athlete; he has the arm and the legs that everyone dreams of. However, he doesn’t make the best decisions, his accuracy is spotty at best, and he lacks experience. He seems to be more of a mystery than Levis but is very similar. He is the classic “can this raw prospect figure it out”.
17. Pittsburgh Steelers – Joey Porter Jr CB (Penn State)
The Steelers struggled against the pass last year, although their pass rush can help cover for the back end. They can look too sure that up with Joey Porter Jr. This isn’t just a feel-good pick, although it does feel right. Porter is a long corner at 6’2 and took his game to the next level at Penn State in his senior season. Passers had a rating of 63.6 when targeting Porter last season.
18. Detroit Lions – Brian Branch S (Alabama)
I already said that Lions defense is rough. Branch can help the pass defense which struggled mightily. Branch can hold his own against the pass, but also is a solid tackler that isn’t afraid to get his nose dirty. Branch can help aid the Lions defense in making that playoff push in 2023.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Bijan Robinson RB (Texas)
Running backs aren’t seen as the commodity they once were, but the Bucs simply could not run the football last year. Ranking dead last in yards, yards per carry, and rushing touchdowns. They desperately need a guy, and Bijan Robinson was without a doubt the best running back in college football. 1580 yards and 18 touchdowns last year. Robinson should be the next great running back in the NFL.
20. Seattle Seahawks – Kelee Ringo CB (Georgia)
Ringo is another great athlete, a part of the back-to-back national championship defenses at Georgia. Ringo is very good in man and zone, took on number ones, and has great explosion. However, at times he is too physical, turns too late, and if he doesn’t clean it up, he will be penalized heavily in the NFL. He relies on athleticism a little too much, and at the next level will have to improve his technique.
21. Los Angeles Chargers – Trenton Simpson LB (Clemson)
The Chargers still struggle mightily against the run game. Simpson is all over the field, he has a nose for the ball, and can hold his own in pass coverage. Simpson also has shown an ability to affect the passer, although his pass rush numbers did dip this past season. The technique needs to get better, but he can fill a big hole in the Chargers defense.
22. Baltimore Ravens – Christian Gonzalez CB (Oregon)
Another tall and fast corner. Gonzalez is clean, has great instincts and is a solid tackler. He is the type of guy that if he doesn’t work at corner, he should work at safety. He does only have one year of elite play (this past season) and was average at best before that. Big receivers could give him trouble, but he has the tools to be a very solid NFL DB.
23. Minnesota Vikings – Clark Phillips III CB (Utah)
The Vikings secondary was, well we’ll call it rough to be nicely. They got cooked by Isaiah Hodgins, Darius Slayton, and Richie James. Phillips is undersized at 5’10 (compared to some of these bigger 6’2 corners), but he held his own against the like of Drake London. Phillips is aggressive and had 6 picks last year but could be overly aggressive. He doesn’t get off blocks very well, but then again that isn’t what I am looking for in a corner.
24. Jacksonville Jaguars – O’Cyrus Torrence G (Florida)
The Jags made the playoffs this year after an abysmal year before, in part this was because of the huge leap made by Trevor Lawrence, going forward they will need to protect him. Enter in O’Cyrus Torrence. In four years, Torrence played 3,065 snaps of college football and didn’t allow a single sack.
25. New York Giants – Antonio Johnson S (Texas A&M)
Solid in coverage, plays down in the box and has solid ball skills. Hybrid linebacker/safety skills. He will need to put on weight at the next level. He is undersized, but it didn’t seem to affect him too much in terms of his ability to play safety in the SEC. Hopefully it won’t hinder him at the next level.
26. Dallas Cowboys – Zay Flowers WR (Boston College)
The Cowboys were so desperate they signed the ghost of TY Hilton. They need a wide receiver. Flowers is the best wideout on the board and in part because of he big leap he took this past season. He is dangerous in the open field and a violent runner. He is undersized though at 5’9 182. The drops will have to go away too, 9 in 2022 was just far too many, especially if you’re in Dallas.
27. Buffalo Bills – Isaiah Foskey EDGE (Notre Dame)
The Bills could use an edge rusher, Foskey did an excellent job of getting to the quarterback last year with sacks (11) and pressures (33). Another raw prospect, but under McDermott and alongside Von Miller, he could mold into a solid pass rusher.
28. Cincinnati Bengals – Devon Witherspoon CB (Illinois)
The Eli Apple’s of the world aren’t getting the job done in Cincy. Devon Witherspoon might be a very big upgrade though. The guy has played great this past season, picks, breaking up passes, just a tough cover holding opposing QB’s to a rating of 24.6. He is a guy that was elite this year, don’t get me wrong, but Illinois didn’t play many elite passing teams this year.
29. New Orleans Saints – JL Skinner S (Boise State)
Am I higher than most on Skinner? Yeah, plus we always see reaches. But this guy just has no weaknesses in my opinion. 6’4 211lbs and if he runs a good 40, he shows the speed. Guy can play the ball, tackle, just seems like a solid safety at the next level. Also seems like a guy that can put a bandage on a rough Saints defense.
30. Kansas City Chiefs – Broderick Jones OT (Georgia)
When you have Patrick Mahomes, you must keep him protected. Broderick Jones just kept Stetson Bennett protected one the way for two national championships. Jones is a great pass blocker; he does lack the same level in terms of the run game. But if I am the Chiefs, and a rookie tackle can protect Mahomes for me? I take that and run.
31. Philadelphia Eagles – Henry To’oTo’o LB (Alabama)
I like To’oTo’o, leader of an Alabama defense, which always sounds good to me. Really good against the run, I think he is better than the numbers indicate in coverage, but he does need to get better. I just think he is a solid linebacker. I don’t think he excels in any one thing at an elite level, but he does everything solid. He is a little undersized but could help this Eagles defense.
