The Curious Case of The Indianapolis Colts

To the uninitiated, the Colts might seem like a boring franchise- devoid of superstars, or rather, the proverbial diamonds in the ruff are few and far between. There was once a time when the Indianapolis Colts, sent a shiver down the spine of all who dared oppose them. Flash forward to present day, and the darling football franchise of Indiana has seemingly stagnated and is clearly frustrated with its lack of progress. This understandable impatience, led them to have a revolving door of starting quarterbacks and the recent fire of their head coach, Frank Reich.

While rumors swirl of Matt Ryan’s retirement, leaving the Colts in a QB situation once again, an even more important position, the head coach, still has a vacant office. With free agency and the NFL Draft just around the corner, these two hallmark moments of the offseason need a coaching staff in office to guide and build the team. The Colts have yet to ink any candidate to a new deal. The question remains, when will this curious case of the Colts find their new head coach?

Colts Winning Complication

The Colts reside in the complicated AFC South where they finished second to last, only besting the Houston Texans in their division rankings. Looking back at week three of the 2022 season, the Colts sat at a record of 1-1-1. To be fair, it was a winning record, granted not the one fans wanted, but it was an even greater foreshadowing of the year ahead- struggling to stay afloat as a winning ball club. All things considered, the Colts finished as an aggressively below-average team with an overall record of 4-12-1.

Why can’t the Colts find stability recently? Since finding the heir apparent to Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck’s career took a turn for retirement from systemic injuries. Since Luck’s departure, the Colts have had seven starting quarterbacks with only one playoff appearance in the post-Luck era with one-year wonder Phillip Rivers at the helm.

Their run of veteran quarterbacks leading the offense has led to undesirable results, to say the least. Rivers being the only exception to this string of bad luck, pun-intended.

Colts Coaching Carousel

Additionally, the coaching carousel has also taken a toll with the change from Chuck Pagano to Frank Reich to the controversial hire of Jeff Saturday (who only won one game after stepping in) as the interim head coach for the 2022 campaign.

All this turnover may have slapped a “buyers beware” sticker on the franchise. Or perhaps Jim Irsay might just be dragging his feet on the next face of the franchise?

According to multiple reports, the Colts have not had a lack of interviews. In fact, they are reportingly on the second round of screenings. While rumors circulate of front-runners for the position, the hesitation to sign might be a telling sign of Jim Irsay’s ownership. As laid out previously, the Colts have been unlucky without Andrew Luck, have a seeming lack of superstar talent, and haven’t had much postseason success. The Colts somehow still managed to have multiple suitors for the head coaching position. The curious case of the Indianapolis Colts might be solved when Jim Irsay either leaves the franchise or when the Colts can find stability at the quarterback position.
