Is the Quarterback Position the Most Popular?

On Wednesday, news came out that former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, Tom Brady, has retired.

Which leads us to the next question, that nobody seems to think about? For all football players, no matter what age level, is the quarterback position the most popular?

For example, if I were playing the latest version of Madden, I’d more than likely choose the QB position. I’d choose that position because you are the play caller, you are in control.

If you were to look at Tom Brady’s stats, you see some crazy numbers.

For example:

In 23 seasons , Brady managed to produce 89,214 passing yards, 649 passing touchdowns , and had completed 7,753 passes out of 12,050 pass attempts. Those numbers, are only from the regular season, Brady had an additional 48 starts in the playoffs.

Now, if we were to look at another position, running back, for example, the numbers are drastically different.

Let’s look at a football great from that position, Emmitt Smith, the all time rushing leader. Smith, is the all time rushing leader and totaled 18,355 rushing yards throughout his career.

If we glance at the wide receiver position as well, the record for receiving yards is 22,895 , held by Jerry Rice.

Tom Brady has quadrupled Rice, if we look at purely numbers. We have to remember though that each position has its advantages and disadvantages.

Brady would have the ball in his hands at all times, meanwhile, if Brady had Smith as a running back, Brady would still be deciding if Smith would be running the ball. Brady could also have the option to call an audible at the line. The same thing could be said in the same scenario but swap out Jerry Rice for Emmitt Smith, and a wide receiver, obviously.

When you have younger kids getting involved with football, you’d have to assume that they’d like to be QB. Remember, back in the day, playing football on Sunday mornings with friends? If you had the opportunity to go back, wouldn’t you want to be quarterback? You get to draw the plays on the football, you get to pick who you are throwing to, you get to show off your mind.

I may be convinced that everyone wants to play quarterback, but, when you have someone like Tom Brady, showing what numbers you can produce in your career, it’s hard to argue.

This post didn’t have the intention to switch players to the quarterback position… if you are a running back or a wide receiver, keep at it! You can be the next person to hold the rushing or receiving records.

Keep on working!
