On Tuesday of this week, the BBWAA (Baseball Writers Association of America) and MLB announced who on the 2023 Hall of Fame Ballot would be inducted into Cooperstown.
Scott Rolen and Fred McGriff are officially the two players of the Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
With the news of Rolen and McGriff earning their spot at Cooperstown , there has also been uproar as well.
For several years , many baseball fans have been frustrated with the process of voting for the MLB Hall of Fame.
Baseball fans seem to believe that the baseball writers who have the opportunity to vote , tend to be out of touch, or have a vendetta against certain players that competed during the Steroid Era.
Gary Sheffield has been on the ballot for the BBWAA for his ninth time following the 2023 ballot.
Sheffield’s son , Gary Sheffield Jr, took to Twitter to voice his frustrations regarding the writers and their thought process while voting.
Braves beat writer, Mark Bowman, commented on Sheffield being snubbed of entry in the MLB Hall of Fame.
Hall of Fame expert Jay Jaffe, had this to say in 2021 regarding Gary Sheffield’s Hall of Fame candidacy in his analysis piece :
“At the plate, Sheffield was viscerally impressive like few others. With his bat twitching back and forth like the tail of a tiger waiting to pounce, he was pure menace in the batter’s box.”
-Jay Jaffe , Fangraphs
The former nine time all star has one more opportunity to make it into Cooperstown next year. If Sheffield doesn’t make it into the Hall of Fame in 2024, unfortunately he will be off the ballot. Sheffield would then be moved to the Era Committee system for review.
Do you believe Gary Sheffield should make it to Cooperstown??
