Redlegs vs Red Sox: Series Recap

The Boston Red Sox travel to Cincinnati,Ohio to take on the Cincinnati Reds for a weekend 3 game series. While the Reds may be cooling down from their previous run earlier in the month, the weather in Cincinnati is red hot. Highs in the upper 90’s all weekend are what’s in store.

Game 1:

Andrew Abbott is on the mound for the Reds, facing off against Kutter Crawford. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Jeimer Candelario keeps his red hot month of June going with a solo home run off Crawford, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead.

Boston would respond in the top of the 2nd, Conner Wong would hit a solo shot of his own off Abbott, tying the game at 1. The Reds would respond again. In the bottom of the 2nd, Jonathan India hit a solo shot of his own, putting the Reds ahead 2-1. It would be a battle of solo home runs in this game. In the top half of the following inning, Jarren Duran hit one for his self, tying the game again at 2. In the bottom of the inning, Jeimer Candelario said let me have another, he would hit his 2nd home run of the game, his 14th of the season and put the Reds up again 3-2.

Both pitchers would settle in. Crawford would go 6.1 innings, allowing 3 runs (all on solo home runs) and strike out 7. Andrew Abbott would have another good start. He would pitch 5.2, allow 4 hits, 2 earned runs(both in solo home runs) and would strike out 10 with 1 walk. In the bottom of 7th inning, Santiago would reach on an error, and Luke Maile would double off Crawford. He would be relived by Cam Booser. TJ Friedl would be the first to see Booser. On the first pitch he would put a bunt down that would score Espinal, the ball would be thrown past the catcher that would allow Maile to score from 2nd base. Alexis Diaz would come in to pitch a scoreless 9th inning as the Reds will take game 1 from Boston 5-2.

Game 2:

The Reds look to take the series against Boston on Saturday. Boston’s starting pitcher is Nick Pivetta, he squares off against Frankie Montas. In the bottom of the first after a Jeimer Candelario infield single, Spencer Steer rocked an upper deck bomb to left field to give the Reds an early 2-0 lead.

Frankie would go 3 straight scoreless innings and be aided by a fantastic play defensive play by Elly De La Cruz. Elly would barehand a ball that ricocheted off Montas’ glove causing Elly to run back towards 3rd base, gunning the runner at 1st. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, De La Cruz would launch a deep home run to right off a 3-2 curveball from Pivetta, extending the Reds lead to 3-0.

Montas wouldn’t allow a run until Dominic Smith would take him to deep center, cutting the lead to 3-1. In the top of the 6th, Wilyer Abreu and Conner Wong would hit back to back doubles, cutting the lead to 3-2. In the top of the 8th, the Red Sox would begin their rally. Ceddanne Rafaela would hit a hard grounder to Jeimer Candelario at 3rd. Candelario would overthrow the ball to first, allowing Rafaela to reach 2nd base. Now with runners on the corners, Rob Refsnyder would pinch hit and hit a single to right on a grounder through the infield that would score Rafaela and put Duran at 3rd. Rafael Devers would then hit a fly ball in foul territory in left, Stuart Fairchild would catch the ball and throw a weak throw home , allowing Duran to score and giving Boston a 4-3 lead. The Reds would get the winning run to the plate in the 9th, but Kenley Janson would get out of it to get the save and the Red Sox the win. Sox win 4-3.

The Reds look to try to get a series win as the Red Sox will use a bullpen day on Sunday.

Game 3:

Sundays rubber match would see the first 4 innings go scoreless. Nick Lodolo started the game off strong but would run into trouble in the 4th. Conner Wong kept his hot back alive with a 2 run home run off Lodolo to give the Reds a 2-0 lead. After a walk now has 2 runners on base, Reds manager David Bell would be ejected in the 4th inning for arguing the strike zone with the home plate umpire Todd Tichenor. This ejection wound be Bell’s 30th career ejection, leaving him 1 shy of the club record and tying him with Sparky Anderson. Next batter would be a routine ground ball to the short stop Elly De La Cruz for what should have been a double play, but Jonathan India threw the ball into the lower seats, scoring the runner and giving the Red Sox a 3-0 lead. Later Jarren Duran hit an RBI double to center, giving Boston a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the 4th, Elly De La Cruz cracked a double to left. He would be followed up by a Jeimer Candelario single that would score De La Cruz, cutting the lead to 4-1.

After a great defensive play by Santiago Espinal, the Red Sox would score again in the 6th. Jarren Duran hit an RBI single, and would be followed up by Rob Refsnyder on a 2 run home run. Red Sox now lead 7-1. The Reds would get 1 back in the 6th. Spencer Steer would score from 1st on a double by Tyler Stephenson, score now 7-2. Later in the inning, Santiago Espinal hit an RBI single that scored Stephenson, Reds now trail 7-3. Stuart Fairchild would chime in and hit a single to center, scoring India and cutting the score to 7-4. In the 9th, Kenley Janson would allow a single and stolen base to Elly De La Cruz, but all for not as the Reds rally comes up short. Red Sox win the game 7-4 and the series as the Reds have dropped 3 consecutive series.
