So the Bills have made Joe Brady their full time OC, which seems to be an improvement over Ken Dorsey. They have also promoted Bobby Babich to DC which will hopefully solve the issue since Leslie Frazier left in 2022. The only remaining question is at the Head Coach spot.
There’s a portion of the fan base that has been calling for McDermott to be fired for a little while, but after the 13 second game those fans got louder. There has been some other games that have been mismanaged, and questionable decisions made by McDermott that have cost the Bills – poor use of timeouts late in games, taking a knee in Philly before halftime, bad challenges etc. In my opinion there is no question that McDermott should be gone, but at the very least he is in the hot seat with a very short leash, so the question then becomes who would or should replace him?
I think you want to keep the identity of the team the same, and while guys like Ben Johnson in Detroit seem like a good choice, I think the Bills should stick with a defensive minded coach.
I ran a poll on X recently on this topic with the options being Pete Carrol, Mike Vrabel, Bill Belichick, or promote from within. Mike Vrabel was the clear winner of this poll, and I would agree with this result. I think he can give the team a more aggressive play style, we would utilize the run game and TE play which would help out the offence, and also would hold people accountable including himself – which seems like something McDermott doesn’t do.
The other option I could get behind is to “promote from within” because I think it helps with continuity and familiarity, and the players feeling comfortable in the scheme. If Mcdermott is gone mid season (maybe around BYE week) then I would probably go with Brady as the new HC, but if we get a full season and see what he can do running the defence, I think the energy we’ve seen and what the players have said about Babich make him a great candidate for the HC position.
At the end of the day, I think McDermott has done as much as he can do with this team, we will forever be grateful for him bringing us out of the drought, but now our expectations have changed, and so should the Head Coach.
