ANother One Bites The Dust; Wicks to Il for a 2nd Time

Chicago Cubs starter Jordan Wicks was placed on the 15-day IL for the 2nd time this season as the Cubs continue to be bit by injuries on a routine basis. Wicks was playing in only his 2nd start off his first IL stint on Friday vs. the Cardinals, when he felt side tightness after 1 & 2/3rd innings. Now the oblique strain will sideline him, likely beyond the minimum 15 days. Right hander Keegan Thompson rejoined the North Siders in a corresponding move.

Wicks joins a list of many Cubs pitcher injuries this season. Fellow starter Ben Brown went on the injured list recently, as well as top prospect Cade Horton also being injured within the previous few weeks. Justin Steele, Drew Smyly and Kyle Hendricks are also pitchers who’ve missed chunks of time on the IL, with Steele being out almost a month and a half. Adbert Alzolay, Julian Merryweather and Yency Almonte are all bullpen options who were on the Opening Day roster to be injured, all for quite some time, and still on the IL.

The Cubs should be in the trade market for starters and relievers, assuming their record is at least close to or at .500. Not to mention positions like 3rd base and catcher also remain as questions. As for Wicks’ injury, Hendricks will be the pitcher taking over for him; he was recently moved to the bullpen and he’s been successful. He wasn’t great as a starter, and although this is true, the Cubs are simply short on options.
