Father’s Day Weekend Baseball: Reds vs Brewers Series Recap

The Cincinnati Reds traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to take on the Brewers for a weekend set. The Reds come in winners of 8 out of their last 11 games. Fridays starters are Hunter Greene for the Reds and Freddy Peralta for the Brewers.

Game 1:

After two quiet innings, TJ Friedl launched his 4th home run of the season off Peralta, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Brewers match the Reds with a solo shot of their own, tying the game at 1. Top of the 4th, Jonathan India hit a go ahead single, scoring Jake Fraley. The Reds play add on in the 5th. Elly De La Cruz hit a triple off of Peralta, scoring TJ Friedl and putting the Reds up 3-1. Jeimer Candelario would follow De La Cruz with a long home run to right, putting the Reds up 5-1. That home run was Candelario’s 100th career home run and his 12th of the season. The Candyman now has 6 homers and 13 RBIs in June.

After the Brewers score 1 in the 5th, TJ Friedl added on to the Reds lead when he would hit an RBI single, scoring Jonathan India and giving the Reds a 6-2 lead. The Brewers would make a late game rally in the 9th. Alexis Diaz has struggled this season. After a De La Cruz error allowed to the Brewers to load the bases, Diaz would walk Joey Ortiz, scoring the runner at 3rd. Reds now lead 6-4. Next batter, Jackson Chourio, hit an RBI single that scored Willy Adames and Jake Bauers initially being called safe on a throw from Will Benson from right, that would’ve tied the game. The Reds would challenge the safe call and replay would show that Bauers slid into the glove of Tyler Stephenson before he reached home plate and was officially ruled out. Reds lead 6-5 with 2 outs in the 9th. Blake Perkins would attempt a 2 out bunt and would pop up to Diaz, ending the Brewers rally and giving the Reds the win, 6-5. Diaz would allow 3 hits, walk 1 and allow 1 earned run. His season ERA is now at 5.47 and he’s only striking out 1.4 batters per 9. Hunter Greene pitched well on Friday night. He would finish with 5 innings pitched, 5 strikeouts, 5 walks while allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits.

Game 2:

Saturdays game would see the Brewers use an opener for a bullpen game. Jared Koenig would get the start for Milwaukee versus Andrew Abbott for the Reds. The game would start out relatively quiet, Jackson Chourio would make a nice play on a fly ball out from TJ Friedl to start the game. Andrew would escape a 2 base runner jam in the bottom of the 1st keeping the game scoreless. The Reds would leave 2 on in the 2nd inning after a Will Benson strikeout would end the threat. In the bottom of the 2nd, Elly De La Cruz would make an impressive play to his left, throwing out the quick footed Turang. Here is Snoop Dogg on the call.

The Brewers would finally get to Abbott in the 5th. Joey Ortiz would hit a 3 run home run off Abbott that would give Milwaukee a 3-0 lead. The Reds would remain scoreless until the 9th, as they try to make a late game rally. Elly De La Cruz would take a 4 pitch walk, then steal 2nd base. He would attempt to steal 3rd on the next pitch, Jeimer Candelario would line a double in the left field gap on a 100 mph fastball that would go to the wall, scoring Elly and cutting the score to 3-1. Unfortunately for the Reds, they wouldn’t get a rally going. Spencer Steer would ground out to the short stop, Candelario would be thrown out trying to advance to 3rd. Then Stuart Fairchild would pop up to the 2nd baseman, ending the game and giving Milwaukee a 3-1 win. Abbott would pitch 5 innings of 4 hit baseball, but the 3 run home run would be his downfall. He’d allow 3 runs on 4 hits, strike out 3 and walk 3.
