Sweet Like Candy! Reds vs Guardians Recap

The Cleveland Guardians travel down I-71 to take on the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark.

Game One:

Tuesdays game would see Cleveland righty Tristian McKenzie take on the Reds bullpen, as the Reds would use an opener. Brent Suter would throw a scoreless 1st, as he would achieve his 500th career inning pitched in Major League Baseball. TJ Friedl would hit a lead off single, he would later reach second base on an error by McKenzie on a pickoff attempt. Jeimer Candelario would slap a double down the third base line, scoring Friedl and giving the Reds a 1-0 lead. Tyler Freeman of the Guardians would make two spectacular catches on consecutive at bats. First, robbing Spencer Steer of sure extra bases, and next taking away a home run from Jake Fraley.

Nick Martinez would relive Suter in the second inning, not allowing a run. The third inning would not be good for Martinez. Martinez would allow 3 runs and would not escape the 3rd inning. Sam Moll would pitch in relief, getting out of the jam. Guardians now lead 3-1. The score would remain the same until the 6th. Elly De La Cruz would reach on a 4 pitch walk, he would reach second on a check swing by Candelario. Spencer Steer would single to right, scoring De La Cruz and cutting the score to 3-2. The Guardians would get an insurance run in the 8th, Josh Naylor would hit a mammoth home run to right field off Fernando Cruz. In the 9th, Jose Ramirez would walk to load the bases, brining up the red hot Josh Naylor. Naylor would hit a ground ball to 1st, but would reach first on the fielders choice, scoring the runner at third and giving Cleveland a 5-2 lead. The Reds would make it interesting in the 9th. Jonathan India would hit an RBI single on a flare to center field, scoring Stuart Fairchild. Blake Dunn would get hit in the head on an 101mph fastball from Emanuel Clase, bringing the winning run to the plate. TJ Friedl would hit a soft line drive to short, ending the Reds rally and giving the Guardians the 5-3 win.

Game Two:

The Reds hope to rebound Wednesday. Lefty Nick Lodolo looks to stay hot against a red hot Guardians lineup. Jeimer Candelario would keep his hot bat going. He would launch a solo home run to right, his 10th of the season, giving the Reds an early 1-0 lead. In the 3rd, after loading the bases, Nick Lodolo would walk David Fry, scoring the runner at 3rd and tying the game at one. In the 4th, Steven Kwan would hit a single to right, Jacob Hurtubise fired the ball home as Brayan Rocchio rounded third. Hurtubise’s throw beat Rocchio, keeping the score tied at 1. An RBI groundout in the 5th would put Cleveland up 2-1, but the Reds looked to storm back. Tanner Bibee had been phenomenal all night, but Jeimer Candelario had his number tonight. After Will Benson and TJ Friedl singled, Jeimer Candelario would launch his second home run of the night, putting the Reds up 4-2. Tanner Bibee would end his night for Cleveland with 11 strikeouts, 1 walk and 4 earned run. All 4 earned runs were off the bat of the Candyman. Alexis Diaz would pitch a scoreless 9th inning, giving him the save and the Reds the win, 4-2. Cincinnati splits the 2 game set against Cleveland. Nick Lodolo would pitch 6 innings, allow 7 hits, 3 walks and 6 strikeouts.

Wednesday was Elly De La Cruz bobble head night and the Elly effect was in full force. Wednesday’s attendance was the largest crowed for a non weekend or opening day game in Great American Ballpark history at 42,427 fans. The Reds look to stay hot when they travel to Milwaukee on Friday to play the Brewers.
